Lira,Raquele M; Silva,Ênio FF; Willadino,Lilia; Oliveira Filho,Ronaldo A; Andrade,Gilvany R.
ABSTRACT Underground water reserves in Semiarid Region present high salinity levels; however, scarcity of resource compels farmers to use this water for conventional agriculture. Biomass production and activity of the antioxidative defense system of Chinese cabbage and watercress were evaluated in plants grown under hydroponic NFT system with brackish water. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replications and five water salinity levels (1.95; 3.37; 4.48; 6.82 and 7.51 dS m-1), obtained by an increasing addition of NaCl into the local water supply and nutrient salts for preparation of nutrient solution. Both watercress and Chinese cabbage plants decreased in fresh and dry shoot biomass, in relation to increase of salinity in...

Antioxidant capacity in relationship to serum lipid peroxides levels in healthy elderly of Mexico City ABCL
Sánchez-Rodríguez,Martha A.; Retana-Ugalde,Raquel; Ruiz-Ramos,Mirna; Mendoza-Núñez,Víctor Manuel.
The aging is one of the factors that cause decrease in the antioxidant capacity. Likewise, it has been proposed that subjects exposed permanently to air pollution develop deficient antioxidant capacity to oxidative stress (OxS). This study aimed to analyze the antioxidant capacity against elevated lipid peroxides in healthy elderly of Mexico City. 105 adults (44 ± 10.8 years) and 126 elderly subjects were studied (68 ± 7.1 years); residents of Mexico City (clinically healthy, non-smokers, non-vitamin supplement takers) who had lived in the city for >10 years. Plasma lipoperoxides (LPO), total antioxidant status (TAS), the activity of red blood cells superoxide dismutase (SOD), and plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx), were studied in all subjects. LPO...

Antioxidant isoenzyme responses to nickel-induced stress in tobacco cell suspension culture Scientia Agricola
Pompeu,Georgia Bertoni; Gratão,Priscila Lupino; Vitorello,Victor Alexandre; Azevedo,Ricardo Antunes.
Exposure to nickel (Ni) at high concentrations can lead to production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in oxidative damage at the cellular level. We investigated the antioxidative responses of Nicotiana tabacum cv BY-2 cell suspension to Ni stress (0.075 and 0.75 mM NiCl2) over a 72 h period with special attention to potential alterations in isoenzymes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR). Two main SOD isoenzymes were observed, a Mn-SOD (band I) and a Fe-SOD (band II), as well as one CAT isoenzyme and four GR isoenzymes. Activity staining analysis revealed that CAT activity plays a major role in the early response to Ni-induced oxidative stress, particularly when the Ni concentration used was low, whilst a...

Ju,J.; Chen,W.; Lai,Y.; Wang,L.; Wang,H.; Chen,W.J.; Zhao,X.; Ye,H.; LI,Y.; Zhang,Y..
Oxidative stress plays an important role in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. In the present study, we determined whether the effect of astragalus polysaccharides (APS) on diabetic cardiomyopathy was associated with its impact on oxidative stress. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice and heterozygous superoxide dismutase (SOD2+/-) knockout mice were administered APS. The hemodynamics, cardiac ultrastructure, and the apoptosis, necrosis and proliferation of cardiomyocytes were assessed to evaluate the effect of APS on diabetic and oxidative cardiomyopathy. Furthermore, H2O2 formation, oxidative stress/damage, and SOD activity in cardiomyocytes were evaluated to determine the effects of APS on cardiac oxidative stress. APS therapy improved...

Changes in growth and superoxide dismutase activity in Hydrilla verticillata L. under abiotic stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Panda,Sanjib Kumar; Khan,Mohammad Hussain.
A study was made of the role of various heavy metals (chromium, zinc, copper and cadmium) together with the effects of NaCl-salinity, PEG-mediated water stress and temperature on growth and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata L.). Almost all metals studied reduced growth but presented a modulatory effect at lower concentrations. NaCl-salinity, water stress and temperature treatments also reduced growth. SOD activity was inhibited by both chromium and zinc but increased by copper and cadmium. NaCl-salinity increased SOD activity while water stress decreased it. SOD showed thermostability with a higher activity being recorded at 45ºC.

Changes in the antioxidative enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation in wheat seedlings exposed to cadmium and lead stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dey,Surjendu K.; Dey,Jayashree; Patra,Sanjukta; Pothal,Debasmita.
Wheat seedlings were grown in presence of CdCl2 (0-200 µM) and Pb(NO3)2 (0-2000 µM) separately. The growth of metal-treated seedlings was significantly depressed. The activities of antioxidative enzymes namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and guaiacol peroxidase (POX) were altered both in root and shoot tissues of 7-d-old seedlings. Under Cd stress, SOD activity in roots was undetectable even at the lowest Cd concentration (50 µM) whereas in shoots it declined sharply with increasing Cd levels. The activity of CAT declined to a greater extent in roots than in shoots. Even though the POX activity increased nine times in shoots, a decreasing trend was observed in root tissues due to Cd stress. Under Pb stress, the induction in SOD activity and...

Soares,Alexandra Martins dos Santos; Souza,Thiago Freitas de; Jacinto,Tânia; Machado,Olga Lima Tavares.
Jasmonates are a class of plant hormones that mediate various aspects in gene and metabolic regulation, defense, stress responses, reproduction and, possibly, communication. Oxidative stress stimulates synthesis of antioxidant metabolites and enhances antioxidant enzyme activities that could protect plant tissues. The aim of this study was to verify the effects of methyl jasmonate (JAME) treatment on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and on the activities of H2O2 scavenging enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX EC; 1.11.1.1), and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX; EC 1.11.1.7) in Ricinus communis leaves. The activity of CAT and GPX was transient while SOD activity decreased and APX increased...

Effect of potassium sources on the antioxidant activity of eggplant¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Marques,Douglas José; Broetto,Fernando; Ferreira,Mozart Martins; Lobato,Allan Klynger da Silva; Ávila,Fabricio William de; Pereira,Fabricio José.
Potassium participates in the essential processes in plant physiology, however, the effects of K sources on plant metabolism have been little studied. Also, in certain cases, K sources and concentrations may cause undesirable effects, e.g., soil salinization. The objective was to evaluate the effect of K sources and levels on the enzyme activity of the antioxidant system and protein content in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) leaves and to determine the most suitable K sources for these physiological characteristics. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks, in a 2 × 4 factorial design, consisting of two K sources (KCl and K2SO4) and rates (250, 500, 750, and 1000 kg ha-1 K2O), with four replications. The following variables were evaluated: plant...

Diets rich in saturated fatty acids are one of the most important causes of atherosclerosis in men, and have been replaced with diets rich in unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) for the prevention of this disorder. However, the effect of UFA on myocardial performance, metabolism and morphology has not been completely characterized. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the effects of a UFA-rich diet on cardiac muscle function, oxidative stress, and morphology. Sixty-day-old male Wistar rats were fed a control (N = 8) or a UFA-rich diet (N = 8) for 60 days. Myocardial performance was studied in isolated papillary muscle by isometric and isotonic contractions under basal conditions after calcium chloride (5.2 mM) and ß-adrenergic stimulation...

Effectivity of anti-oxidative enzymatic system on diminishing the oxidative stress induced by aluminium in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seedlings Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Singh,Sushant; Verma,Anil; Dubey,Vikash Kumar.
We explore physiological and biochemical response under increasing aluminium stress at different time interval in chickpea seedlings (Cicer arietinum L.). Germination percentage and root length were found to be highly reduced under increasing metal stress. Aluminium induced oxidative stress and led to fluctuations in antioxidative activity responses. Roots showed higher antioxidative activity compared to shoots. Low concentration of aluminium after a brief treatment induced higher superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC 1.11.1.11) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX; EC 1.11.1.7) activity whereas longer duration of treatment led to decrease in these activities. Malondialdehyde concentration indicated higher oxidative damage in roots...
